About Us
WHAT IS PHYSIE?
Physical Culture (or physie as we all call it) is a sport for girls and women which aims to build confidence, good posture, fitness, strength, and flexibility through exercise.
Physie has been established in Australia for over 115 years, with some 150 clubs in existence across the country. Our syllabus is a combination of basic ballet, aerobic warm ups, standing and floor exercises, and jazz dance, with routines performed to modern music. Physie is beneficial for all ages with fun-filled classes promoting flexibility, coordination, rhythm and teamwork.
The physie syllabus starts afresh each February, so the beginning of the year is a great time to join in. All routines are built upon as the year progresses.
ABOUT OUR CLUB
Mermaid Beach Physical Culture is now in it's 9th year. The club has over 100 members ranging from 4 years right through to 60 and over. We are extremely proud that so many of our foundation members are still active members of the club today.
We hold classes at Miami Primary School Hall, and beginners are always welcomed. Mermaid Beach physie is a low cost form of dance, with classes just $6 a lesson plus annual registration and insurance fee. Only one leotard is required for the years competitions and there are no expensive costumes or footwear.
The physie year culminates in the individual and team competitions, held locally and interstate. Mermaid Beach has been extremely successful over the years, now boasting four individual national champion titles, and sixteen state team titles. In 2009, the club had an amazing 8 national level top 5 placegetters including a national champion, 4 individual state champions, 4 state team championship pennants, 38 state finalists and 30 national level competitors.
Competitions are entirely optional, with the opportunity available to compete both individually and/or in a team. Most of our members elect to participate in the competitions, as they are a great fun way to show off the hard work put in throughout the year, build confidence, meet new friends and show that Mermaid team spirit. In addition, mini concerts are held throughout the year for the juniors, a great fun afternoon, with family and friends welcome to watch the girls perform on stage.
Results aside, the fun and friendship, whilst keeping fit is what our club and sport are all about. We have many social functions throughout the year, which add to the sense of club spirit and camaraderie.
At Mermaid Beach, all girls are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability, but the fun along the way is always what the girls remember at the end of the year.
